Maybe, just maybe, Gohan thought, maybe he had over done it this time.
How long? How long had it been since they had begun? When was it that things started getting so out of control?
Gohan’s arms burned with the vibrant sensation of pain as he blocked yet another volley of fierce blows, the feeling accompanying Krillin’s punches not feeling at all as they should during a routine spar, but rather like they were both fighting tooth and nail for something important, very important. Krillin pushed forward, his face split with a snarl as he pulled his fist back for another swing. He seemed ruthless and without mercy, whatever notions of restraint having finally left the older monk’s mind when first blood had been drawn. Gohan reeled back; stifling a cry of pain as Krillin finally broke through his guard and clocked him straight in the face, causing the demi saiyan’s lips to erupt in a wave of scarlet as he was sent flying.
Gohan landed hard, catching himself as best he could before the pressure of his friend’s blows truly took their toll. He choked, the blood pooling within the depths of his throat finally splashing past his lips and decorated the floor beneath him in a horrid array of scarlet. Gohan had not the time to recover before a ki blast raged past his head, singeing his ebony locks just barely as gohan motioned quickly out of its trajectory.
Gohan bore his teeth as he took to the air once more, his fists becoming alight with the vibrant glow of his Ki. He pressed forward, finally on the offensive. “Krillin! You said no Ki blasts! You cheated!” The young fighter roared, his eyes blazing with unknown emotion as he struck the other hard across the face with his fist.
Finally drawing blood.

The blow caught him by surprise, cutting in over his low guard. That was Gohan all over, always improving, always finding new ways to impress. A balled right fist struck him across the mouth, shredding his lip, but barely moving his head. He knew it had been a good hit, but it hadn’t been strong enough. Not to defeat him, and not to defeat their enemies.
He grimaced through teeth marbled with blood and vaulted away, landing with his feet against the wall, before springing off and diving clear over Gohan’s head.
“You think they’ll play by any rules?” he asked, drawing power into his right fist, “I’m not here just to teach you how to fight. I’m here to teach you how to survive. This isn’t a game. And people who play by rules are just going to lose to those who don’t. You need to learn.”
He hurled the ball in a low arc, knowing he’d given Gohan every chance of avoiding it. It was about time the boy learned that not everything was as it seemed, that taking things on face value, that hoping for the best, wasn’t an option. He opened his fingers and brought his hand around, seizing control of the airborne sphere, directing it away from the wall and back towards Gohan.
“If you don’t learn to defend yourself - really defend yourself - you’re going to end up just like your father.”
He’d tried to make Gohan understand the importance of pushing himself. He’d used words, and it wasn’t enough. That left actions. If he didn’t use his power, if he didn’t fight with all he had every time, he was never going to get stronger. Not the way he needed to be. Gohan probably had untapped potential that ran so much deeper than Krillin’s. He was half Saiyan, after all. But it was never going to manifest. Krillin couldn’t let him continue like that. He couldn’t stay weak.
“We’re not playing anymore. This is serious.”
He pumped his arms, piston-fast, spraying out energy in all directions. This was the fury and the disregard he would have to contend with. These were the kinds of attacks he would need to learn to survive.

His mentor’s words only served to bring his blood to a boil, finally pushing the young demi saiyan back into the familiar steps of battle as he dodged Krillin’s volleys. Gohan found himself repeating the same motions he had done so many times before back home, one his mother would have never approved of. The familiar hum of Krillin’s Ki sent him quickly back into his old habits, sending him back into those same horrible spars that left them both without any energy to stand.
Gohan snarled, his dark eyes blazing at the mention of his father but his anger was soon tempered as he found himself within a storm of incoming Ki blasts. He knew what Krillin had intended with that remark, and he hadn’t been sure what angered him more; the fact that Krillin mentioned his father’s death so casually, or that he had used it as a ploy to anger him in a fight. “I never thought it was a game, Krillin!” Gohan replied sharply, rearing back as another ki blast shot past him before pulling back and pressing forward, his fists burning with Ki of his own.
“My father knew how to defend himself!!” Gohan roared, His body twisting with sharp precision as he landed a harsh kick to krillin’s side, gifting him with enough momentum to push himself skyward and perfect opportunity to strike. Gohan quickly gathered his hands together, focusing his energy to the center of his palms until it began to take form and began to glow a familiar orange glow.
“MASENKO…..HA!”

Krillin had loved Goku. He had been dearer than a brother to him. But Gohan was wrong. He hadn’t known how to defend himself. Not when it had counted. He was always so powerful and so confident in a fight that they’d never had a choice but to look up to him, but when it came to survival, he’d just been too much of an idealist. He’d refused to believe that a fight couldn’t end with both parties walking away as better men. And that had killed them all. Unless Krillin could get this kid to understand the stakes.
The goad had worked a little too well. The kick had shattered ribs, even with his guard up. It was nothing Bulma couldn’t fix, but for now it hurt like a son of a bitch. He righted himself in mid-tumble, landing on his knees, only to see a spear of energy rushing through the air towards him. He brought his arms up in a cross-guard, turning the spear into a battering ram. It couldn’t punch right through him, but it hit him with enough force to smash him off the ground and into the wall.
Through the wall, actually. He hit and felt the metal plating give way, spitting him out onto the deck.
