Her words brought back a recollection of shimmering crystal spires that jutted outwards from the surface of a long-gone world to pierce the veil of the planet’s inner atmosphere. They had been crafted by the minds and the wills of all who dwelt there, monuments to their power, their mastery over the material. It had not been hubris so much as it had been progress, a measure of their proximity to their ultimate goal.
Distortions rippled and pulsed around their apexes, ribbons and swirls and eddies of light that reached out across the sky and transformed their world into a kaleidoscopic cavalcade of colour. Quite beautiful, he recalled.
When Frieza and his family had destroyed their city, the spires had fallen like a crystal rain, deadly to all they touched. With their concentration shattered, so was their architecture. He and his pupils had cowered in the planet’s lower reaches while their world collapsed, quite literally, around them.
Then, Frieza himself had come. The horrors he had wrought were burned indelibly upon his mind, like the screaming cackle of the madman himself.
“Yes. We have all lost our children.” He bowed his head in solemn remembrance. “Our fathers and brothers too. We have all lost so much.”
He appraised her. She was a slender creature, who seemed to favour speed and acrobatics over physical power. There was some advantage to be had in that, certainly. But she did not seem like one who was accustomed to combat.
“Can you fight, Everion? We will be stronger as one, rather than as many, but only if we are all of equal and complementary power. When the time comes, will you be able to fight alongside a Saiyan and an Ice Djinn? Are you confident of your abilities? And will you strike the final blow without hesitation, if the opportunity arises? Because make no mistake, one chance may be all that we are given.”

Bulma lit another cigarette while she stood in front of the wall Krillin and Gohan had blown out. She tucked her lighter into her pocket and took a slow draw while she mentally gauged how many hours it would take to repair the damage. As the boys got stronger, it was only going to get worse. In all likelihood, she'd probably have to help the workers on board redesign the entire Panic Room so the ship wouldn't be compromised in a future "sparring session". Though she was afraid that if there was a next time, the damage to the ship would be the least of her worries. With the damage assessed, Bulma went on her way, taking note of others walking about. The break from all the activity in her lab was refreshing; she'd been locked up working in there for quite a while. Time tended to slip her by when she got in the zone, so it was good to stretch her legs every now and then. Still, she frowned as she hoped all the people in her lab didn't wreck anything. Speaking of aliens...Bulma paused when she finally came upon a familiar prince. She removed her cigarette from her mouth and exhaled, looking around them, before her gaze settled back on Vegeta. He was sitting up against a wall, head leaned back and looking like he was fast asleep. She briefly comtemplated leaving him be. After all, she didn't owe him any sign of gratitude for not harming Krillin when he had the chance. He hadn't shown that restraint with Goku. But the mental reminder still wasn't enough to make her leave. Facts were facts; he refrained this time from using lethal violence, and even if Krillin wasn't grateful, she most certainly was. Steadying her resolve, Bulma approached him until she was standing next to him and looking down at him. Reaching down, she nudged him on the shoulder of his armor. "Hey you, if you're tired and want to sleep, your room would probably be more comfortable." Vegeta had long ago learned how to tune the voices of others out and fill his head with nothing but the vacuum of space, essentially leaving his body a motionless husk from which Frieza could derive no form of pleasure. No actions, no voices, no sensation of any kind could break through his defense. He would never cry, he would never scream, and he would never move; he’d become the living statue that stared into the abyss and waited for the inevitable blackness of death to overwhelm him. And yet somehow, he hadn’t been sure how, the female human’s voice had begun to breach his silence and pull him forward into the world of the living. Years of practice and forced silence had begun to crack with every word she spoke without scorn, even when she spoke to herself he could not bring himself to shut her out completely. Vegeta opened his eyes, and without really meaning to, immediately fixated his strange gaze upon the woman that lingered above him. She hadn’t moved and remained steadfast as she gave his shoulder a firm squeeze, an action that nearly earned her a look of confusion. ‘Why, why is she here?’

Everion smiled grimly at him, she could understand his concern. With his tail partially cut off and one of his horns broken. Fraust seemed like he was used to seeing battle. She could see why he would not want dead weight to be coming along for the ride. If someone in the group wasn’t able to pull their weight, everything could fall apart. This mission was perhaps the only thing giving the universe hope.
“Yes, I can fight. I have three transformations. However, I will admit, I am rusty in my fighting skills. As a general rule, my people are peaceful. Fighting is highly frowned on. So, It has been a while since I have done any kind of fighting.”
She sighed, it was frustrating admitting that. She hoped he didn’t think that she would be a burden to the mission. She really did feel that she needed to be with them to defeat Frieza.
“I will be training daily to get back in to the swing of it. With that being said, I don’t hesitate in battle, any hesitation could be the end of my life. I will do what ever it takes to stop this monster.”

“And you understand the peril of this quest?” he asked, “that our enemy is, to all intents and purposes, immortal. Even if we are able to overpower him, and such an eventuality is unlikely, we may not be able to slay him. There may simply be no opportunity to land the final blow. If that is the case, our mission may be destined to fail.”
These were grim facts, true, but it was necessary to be sure of everyone’s commitment to the cause. Many of them, like Fraust, had elected to join the Saiyans’ crew because they had nothing left to lose. But from what Everion had told him, she had friends and family, a planet that still drew breath somewhere in the depths of the cosmos. Even so, he also knew that others had joined because their own planets and loved ones would not be safe until Frieza was slain. Either motivation was equally valid.
“If your conviction is strong, then we welcome your assistance. We will need many strong fighters if we are to stand a chance against Frieza’s armies. Even now, I suspect more soldiers are flocking to join him than ever before, thanks to his newfound power.”
Defeating Frieza alone was not a simple matter, but he had no doubt amassed followers by now, and they would fight for him. They would likely not be loyal, nor as strong as Frieza himself, but their numbers would be diminished and their strength sapped by a pitched battle with the overlord’s minions. And there was simply no possibility that Frieza would not happily let others do his fighting for him if he did not have to do it himself.
“If you are ever in need of a sparring partner, I would be happy to offer my services,” he told her, “though I am of his kind, I do not fight in the same way as our opponent. However, it will be necessary for us to become well-versed in one another’s abilities and styles in order to work as an effective unit. Though I am not sure how we will ensure the cohesion of our group, with all the current dissension.”
He cast a glance across the chamber, to where the Saiyan prince was currently seated. He had an obligation to serve as a leader for his species, but he had lost his will to do so. He might very well be the linchpin that determined their success or failure.
“In the meantime, perhaps we should find the stores that I spoke of earlier.”

The ship was cold, the ship was daunting, the ship brought her no interest or enjoyment, but solemn realization that this was really happening. Marcia Violet stared out at the endless space that was shown through her window in her room, blinking blankly as they passed by various space rocks, catching glimpses of stars that she could have only viewed in science books back on her home planet, now only miles away from her. It was...surreal, but completely empty for her. She had felt this from time to time, ever since her older sister had been murdered, and doubted this feeling would ever truly go away.
She rap her metal hand against the window, musing how easily it would be to break it and be sucked into the airless atmosphere, thus ending her life in the cold, empty universe, but pulled away from the glass, standing up tall and deciding to walk out of her chambers and onto the main deck, her thoughts on how she had ended up on the very ship that contained not only her greatest allies, but her worst enemy. The one the Saiyans called "Prince Vegeta". Heh, Prince. In fairy tales, Princes were as noble as knights and charming by nature, courteous and brave. But it seemed that this "Prince" was nothing more than a pitiful excuse of a coward whose charm was to be a repulsive, murderous bastard that had his head up in his ass. The violet haired woman felt her metal fingers twitch with desire to strangle the man, but unlike him, she had honour. She would not attack her ally unless it was in a spar, or he turned on them. And honestly, she hoped that he would turn on them one day, just so she, and Krillin, from what she could gather through his obvious hatred towards the man, could have the right to kill him.
Marcia breathed out a sigh, her breath catching strands of her slicked back hair that fell over her green eyes, "God, I need a drink." She muttered lowly, passing by her allies as she wandered about aimlessly, musing on the turn of events that led her here. So many species she never knew of, it was half-heartwarming to see many of diverse nature get along, and half-disappointing to know that she would never find such unity on her home planet, but humans have always been such fickle creatures. She had seen enough to know that.
She sought to be polite to her allies, and bowed her head in a nod as she passed them, not knowing where she was heading, but allowing her legs to move. Maybe she could just wander a bit, or find someone to spar with, either way, sitting around in her room moping and being all melancholy wasn’t going to help her fight against Frieza.

Bulma wasn't quite sure if he'd been awake the whole time, but judging by the sharpness in Vegeta's eyes, she figured that was the case. She could practically feel his discomfort over being touched, and so she moved her hands back to settle them on her hips. Despite the overwhelming urge to look away from him, she maintained their eye contact. No matter how fierce his stare was, she would not be cowed by him.
Several uncomfortable moments ticked away as she waited for him to respond. When it became obvious that he was not going to say a word, Bulma broke the silence.
"Alright, well, I just wanted to thank you for earlier, with Krillin. You could've really hurt him, but you didn't..."
Bulma paused to gather her thoughts, well aware of the absurdity of the situation. Here she was, willingly thanking this man who had committed atrocities she probably couldn't even imagine. And for what, for not killing another one of her friends? What she really should've been doing was walking away from him, and joining Krillin in blinding hatred of the Saiyan in front of her.
Instead, she remained right where she was, unwilling to leave. She had sought Vegeta out, and she wouldn't back out now. But she still couldn't help her growing anger as his silence stretched on.
"Well?" she finally snapped in frustration. "I'm trying to thank you over here! Aren't you going to say anything?"

There had been something about the depths of the human’s eyes that, over the growing months, had begun to draw his interest. He hadn’t been sure why, but there had been something about the color, the way the light played off her strange blue oculars that seemed to draw him in. Her voice, on the other hand, had the opposite effect. Despite his inability to shut her out, her voice when raised grated his ears and made him want to slam his head repeatedly against anything hard enough to make him black out.
Vegeta swell of confusion nearly brimmed with her change in posture, her earlier nervousness having faded into halfhearted hostility. He could not hide the furrowing of his brow and the look of confusion that nearly over took his face as he watched her near, her eyes narrowing in expectation. Vegeta shirked away, etching closer to the window he’d so interested in not moments before.

Everion nodded, she knew that in effect, they would never truly win. However, even if they could find a way to contain him, however, maybe they could still save others from his wrath. She smiled grimly, it was good knowing that Frieza was an oddity among his kind. It gave her hope that maybe there might still be a chance.
“ Frieza is a cold, cruel person with no concern for other living creatures. No one is safe until he is defeated….in any way possible. I would rather risk my life to protect the lives of others.” She looked up at Fraust, “I would be honored to spar with you.”
When she heard Fraust mention the stores, Everion perked up. She really needed to get some candy. She could feel herself shaking at this point. Once she got some, she would be fine. There was something about candy that just made her need it desperately. Everion followed Fraust down the hall.
“Maybe we could teach each other some techniques. I could show you how my people train, we usually like to be with nature…but I think we can make due with what we have. I’m curious to see how you’re people fight.”
Everion sped up and stopped in front of him. She now thought of some things that she needed to know. Her head tilted back as far as it could go, and looked him in the eye. She sucked in as much air as she could get into her lungs and opened her mouth, “ Do your people have a different styles, or do you all do the same thing? Do you have any special attacks? Do you have a lot of fighting experience? Do you think we will be able to pull together in time to fight as a team? What do you think we should do about Frieza? Do you have an idea of how we could stop him?”

There was a flicker of confusion behind Vegeta's discomfort that, for an insane moment, made him strangely endearing in her eyes. Bulma shook her head, mentally chastising herself; she was being ridiculous to think of him that way, not to mention irrational for expecting him to speak at all. The man never said anything, and if it weren't for the one sentence he vocalized months ago, she would've been certain that he couldn't speak at all.
Her eyes refocused on him when he suddenly become animated, her blue eyes analyzing every motion he made, as though searching for the missing insight that words would have easily provided. For a moment, she was certain he was going to stand and walk away.
But Vegeta merely scooted over a bit, putting distance between them. Bulma tapped the ashes off the cigarette still between her fingers, her anger melting into curiosity. He certainly didn't need words to get his point across - the tight set in his jaw, the way his brows furrowed said more than enough. He was obviously uncomfortable with her presence, which was unsurprising.
She wondered, glancing briefly up at the others walking about, if he had any real friends on board. Or at least, someone to talk to - an ally, perhaps? Tarble was his brother, she knew that much, but she'd never seen Vegeta speak to him. He never spoke to anyone, never seeking out anyone's presence.
On the flip side though, no one ever sought out his either.
The thought made her eyes soften. Bulma studied the prince for a few seconds longer, and then figured she'd make herself comfortable. Ignoring how tense Vegeta was, she sat down right next to him, crossing her legs and leaning back against the wall.
"You don't say much, do you?" It wasn't a question. Bulma took a slow draw from her cigarette, blew the smoke out, and then extended it to him without looking at him. "You smoke?"

The shift in the woman’s movements quickly stirred him from his forced concentration and brought his gaze snapping back to meet the sight her tiny frame settling next to his own. He could feel the unbearable tension rising from within his very core, and the familiar rhythmic ache quickly birthed within his temples once more. She eased her back against the wall, keeping her attention on the smoldering object she held between her dainty fingers, almost as though she enjoyed basking in the ebbing smoke that slowly drifted from the singed end.
He hadn’t known what to make of her actions—why, why was she so close? She had never exhibited such behavior before. While her presence was grating, she was at least tolerable. She never said more than what she truly needed to, though he had noticed a sudden spike in her interest in interacting with him, and she kept herself at bay. She feared him to some degree, and always kept a distance.
Vegeta watched her, his unusual eyes steadied yet intent- observing her every movement with a quick glance. Bulma exhaled, relaxing in place as she began her usual idle chit-chat, speaking more so to herself than to her tenuous companion. The prince relaxed his stare, somehow at ease with her grating chatter. He simply looked to the floor, fixating upon the smooth, steel surface.

Bulma kept her eyes straight ahead, even while she felt his heavy gaze burning into her profile. She tried to remain calm, but Vegeta's stare was intense, even when she wasn't looking him in the eye. The silence between them was thick, and for a moment, she wondered if she'd crossed the line. From what she'd seen, it seemed that the only people who came this close to Vegeta were those armed with violent intentions. Everyone else must have feared him enough to keep their distance, and rationally, she knew she should have probably done the same. The man was infinitely more powerful than she was, and could end her with a look if he felt like it. Who knew what could set him off?
And yet, Bulma stubbornly remained right where she was, as though challenging the Saiyan next to her to give her a reason to rekindle her old blinding hatred of him. Providing Vegeta didn't outright kill her (she was, after all, much too smart and beautiful to die), a violent physical reaction would be more than enough to put out this fire of interest she had towards him. Bulma raised her cigarette again to her lips, keeping her hand steady and counting the seconds away as time slowed down.
But the seconds ticked away, and nothing happened. Finally, she felt Vegeta look away from her, and it suddenly felt like she could breathe again. She sighed in relief, observing him out of the corner of her eye. The prince was staring down at the floor, looking like he had no intention of answering her question regarding whether or not he smoked.
Well, at least he didn't kill me, Bulma mused silently to herself in relief. After all, if he'd wanted to end her life, he would've surely done it by now. Though still wary to be so close to him, her fear started to vanish when she realized that he really wasn't going to say or do anything. On the other side of that coin though, he hadn't stood up and left either, and so neither would she for the time being. She'd only intended to leave her lab for a few minutes, but she was suddenly in no rush to go back to her work.
"Didn't take you to be a smoker anyways," Bulma finally said, breaking their silence. She waited a beat to see if Vegeta would respond, but when he didn't, she added, "I was just curious, cause one of the Saiyan chicks really seemed to like my cigarettes. Zasha, I think her name was. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was it." Bulma hesitated a moment, and then turned her attention directly to the prince next to her.
"Do you know her?"

Perhaps the woman had simply gone insane, the prince reasoned with himself silently as he sat wrapped in his silence, perhaps she had finally lost what remained of her senses and simply aimed for her demise by his hands? Vegeta studied the ground with an intensity that many warriors could only dream of carrying into battle as he attempted to will the woman’s words from his mind, wishing now more than anything else for the return of his deaf ear to the outside world. And for a moment, it seemed as though he had been awarded his wish with her temporary silence as she studied him-feeling her crystalline eyes studying him with an openness that nearly made him leave--until, unfortunately, she began her usual prattle and returned her focus to the strange object between her fingers.
No, she had not lost her mind, the prince concluded, nor did she wish for death; she was simply stubborn. And it did not appear as though she would be leaving him to his own devices any time soon.
Vegeta resigned himself to his fate with a silent exhale as he soaked in the last of her question, hanging from her lips in expectation as she watched him for any form of reaction. He’d known of the saiyan she’d spoken of; the wild twin of his unwanted guard---he’d remembered her, he remembered. The prince swallowed the lump of bitterness that quickly gathered within the pit of his throat and nodded, the reaction had come before he’d had time to stop his head from moving.
A reaction he would soon regret.
