Name: Ethan Burke
Aliases: Was known as Douglas Hauser before adopting his new name.
Age (actual/appears): Burke is in his late twenties, but appears to be in his early thirties.
Gender: Male
Nationality: American
Occupation/Organisation: Burke is a member of the Stars voluntary police organisation, a defector from the ranks of the UBCS.
Allies: As a member of Stars, Burke assumes that the organisation can be relied upon. This is usually a correct assumption. He tends to treat ordinary police officers, government personnel and even civilians with a degree of suspicion, however. Regardless, this does not stop him from assisting them. He would just rather not rely on them for anything. He has a particular fondness for women who are a little on the feral side, which is why Shak has proven such a good partner for him. She is perhaps the only person that he genuinely likes.
Enemies: Burke passionately hates the Umbrella Corporation, as most members of Stars do. But while he considers them to be his primary enemies, he has a general acceptance of the fact that anyone can be an enemy waiting to happen. Those he trusts, he can count on one hand, which is why he surrounds himself with those most likely to be on his side in Stars.
Physical Description: Burke is of average height at just under six feet tall. His build is also average - muscular, but not overly so. He has medium length hair, dark and unkempt. He doesn’t care much for personal grooming and, other than rinsing himself off regularly, doesn’t observe much in the way of vanity. He has cold blue eyes that are usually narrowed. His face is a mask of criss-crossing scar tissue, giving his face the appearance of a jigsaw puzzle. One of his eyes is perpetually bloodshot as a result of an old injury.
Attire: Burke wears a blue uniform coverall with his sleeves rolled up to above the elbow. The Stars logo is emblazoned on the right shoulder. Beneath, he wears a black t-shirt. He wears a pair of sturdy military issue boots. He also has a camo green UBCS-issue beret, onto which has been stitched a crude Stars logo.
Strengths: Though he is not a particularly outstanding specimen, Burke is a soldier and is good at what he does. He is strong, intelligent and possesses quick reflexes. He is proficient with a variety of weapons, particularly sub-machineguns, and hand-to-hand combat. He has a keen tactical mind and would probably be leadership material if he didn’t prefer to work alone. He cares for those in his team and will do anything to protect them, which usually helps in securing their loyalty. He is also immune to T-virus infection, making him an asymptomatic carrier. Though his blood is contagious, he shows no outward sign that he has the virus.
Weaknesses: Burke is not especially light on his feet, so stealth is not a tactic he uses. He is not technologically savvy, and so has no skills with electronics or computers. Burke tends to believe that his actions speak louder than words, the last recourse of a man who is unable to communicate with others properly. Though he has a desire to be inoffensive to those around him, his intensity, caustic wit and general disregard for other people’s feelings mean that he is quite unpopular. As such, while he would make a good leader on paper, he finds it difficult to motivate people through anything other than derision. Burke does not shy away from self-sacrifice, and would happily give his own life to protect someone he felt was deserving. This might yet get him killed.
Personality: Burke is usually quite analytical about most combat situations. He is less comfortable in interpersonal relations. He has a tendency to be moody and unwilling to entertain conversation. He would much rather come to someone’s rescue than speak to them, and is far more interested in being in a battle than a discussion. His attitude is usually sullen and serious to a fault. He seems more relaxed around his partner, Shak, however. Though he is not a sadist, he does take a certain satisfaction in the deaths of Company employees, as he feels it makes a better world. And, while not a masochist, he enjoys the feel of exertion or pain from a well-earned wound.
Background: Born Douglas Hauser, Burke was born the first child of a poor family. Three sisters and a younger brother came later, and all helped with sustaining the family. Their parents worked for the Company in a mundane capacity, and yet were both killed on the job in “accidents” that were never explained to them. The life insurance pay-off for both their mother and father stretched to a couple of years easy living for the family, but the money ran out quickly.
Burke’s sisters took any job they could find, but Burke found it more difficult to get work. Pressure mounted on him to find something, until eventually he decided to join the UBCS. Living in a city that was no friend to the Company, Burke was forced to swallow his pride and, while serving as a checkpoint guard, was unable to bring himself to go home, too ashamed to show his face in his old neighbourhood.
The years passed without incident and Burke was promoted to Corporal of a group of three others. A disaster in the slums of the city and a subsequent viral outbreak forced Burke and his team into action, and the team were killed under varying circumstances, despite Burke’s best attempts to keep them alive. In the end, Burke let his prerogative to save civilian lives interfere with his duty as a UBCS soldier, and knew he would not be able to go back.
Burke gave his all to rescue as many civilians as he could, and in doing so came into contact with the Stars organisation. He joined the group and there met Shak. She gave him his new alias of Ethan Burke, after a veteran who had given his life in her defence previously. She also gave him his face full of scars, at his request, in order to disguise his true identity and protect his family. Knowing he could not go back, Burke dedicated his life to Stars and the eradication of the Umbrella Corporation.
As a defector from Umbrella, he was not readily trusted. He was also hampered by his dour moods and general unwillingness to play nicely with others. He was paired with Shak in the protection of Jonathan Wesker, a duty which he finds he enjoys, if only because she is there with him.
Unfortunately, something attacks their safe house and they all taken into captivity. Burke awakens to find the others gone, and himself alone in unidentified surroundings.
Personal Effects: Burke has no personal effects to speak of.
